Tony Awards 2014: Carole King, Janis Joplin, Hedwig Nominated

This morning the 68th Annual Tony Awards nominations were announced and some well-known stories were among the leaders. Broadway musicals about the life of Carole King and Janis Joplin, plus the new show featuring Frozen’s Idina Menzel and the Hedwig and the Angry Inch revival were all among the nominees.

CBS News reports that Beautiful – The Carole King Musical is nominated for best musical, while actress Jessie Mueller, who portrays King, is nominated for best actress in a leading role in a musical. The show landed four other nominations, including best featured actress, best book, best orchestrations and best sound design.

Meanwhile, A Night with Janis Joplin garnered a nomination for lead actress Mary Bridget Davies playing Joplin.

Idina Menzel, whose work on “Let It Go” from Frozen has become its own hit single, earned a best leading actress nomination for her new musical If/Then.

And finally, the revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, starring Neil Patrick Harris, landed multiple nominations including best revival and best lead actor for Harris.
